Why Does an Older House Have So Much Outside Air Coming In?

This is why a furnace or boiler shouldn’t be evaluated as an isolated metal box.
The room and house surrounding the appliance can be part of the combustion system.
Change the house, and it can be worth checking the appliance again.
What Is Backdrafting?
Backdrafting occurs when combustion gases that should travel up a chimney or vent instead spill back into the building.
That’s a condition homeowners should take seriously.

Could Air Sealing and Insulation Create the Same Concern?
Yes.
Windows are only one piece of the building envelope.
A homeowner might replace windows and doors, air-seal the attic, add insulation, seal a crawlspace, finish a basement, and close gaps around plumbing or electrical penetrations.
Each individual project can improve the home.
Together, however, they can substantially reduce uncontrolled air infiltration.

They aren’t.

Imagine a furnace that has operated for 25 years.
Then you replace the windows.
A few months later, someone identifies a draft or combustion-air problem.
It’s natural to ask:
“How could the furnace suddenly be unsafe? Nothing changed with the furnace.”
Exactly.
Nothing may have changed with the furnace.
The building changed.
The old equipment was installed into one set of pressure, airflow, and infiltration conditions. Renovations created another.
That doesn’t necessarily mean the heating system suddenly became defective, it just means you need to reconsider its environment.
