Hybrid Heating Systems in Cherry Hill, NJ

A hybrid heating system pairs an electric heat pump with your existing gas, oil, or propane furnace, so your home has two ways to stay warm. The heat pump handles most of the heating and all of your cooling, and the furnace takes over when it’s the better option. Davis Heating & Air has installed and serviced heating systems across Cherry Hill and Burlington and Camden County since 1999, and we’re set up to help qualifying customers claim the utility rebates available for these systems.

Signs a Hybrid System Is a Good Fit for Your Home

A hybrid setup tends to pay off when your home checks a few of these boxes:

  • Your central AC is 12 or more years old and due for replacement
  • Your furnace is in good shape and still has years of life left
  • You heat with oil or propane and want to burn less of it
  • Your home already has ductwork from a forced-air system
  • You want lower emissions but aren’t ready to give up combustion heat entirely
  • You’d like to take advantage of rebates while they’re available

If your AC is on its way out, that’s usually the best time to look at a hybrid system. You’re already paying for new outdoor equipment, and a heat pump costs only modestly more than a straight AC replacement.

Benefits of a Hybrid Heating System

  • Lower heating costs on mild and moderate winter days, which make up much of a South Jersey heating season
  • One outdoor unit for both heating and cooling
  • Less wear on your furnace, since it only runs during the coldest stretches
  • A built-in backup if either heat source needs repair
  • A smaller carbon footprint without replacing a furnace that still works
  • Access to utility rebates for qualifying cold-climate equipment

Hybrid Heating Rebates and Financing in South Jersey

New Jersey utilities offer rebates for adding a cold-climate heat pump alongside an existing fossil-fuel system. Under PSE&G’s Hybrid Heat (partial displacement) pathway, the heat pump replaces your old AC and covers part of your heating load, while your current furnace stays on as the primary heat source.

  • Standard rebate: up to $2,000, or 30% of project cost
  • Income-qualified rebate: up to $3,000, or 40% of project cost

To qualify, a project generally needs:

  • A cold-climate air-source heat pump (ccASHP) from the program’s approved product list
  • Approved integrated controls that switch automatically between the heat pump and furnace
  • A participating contractor to complete the Manual J and Manual S load calculations and submit the paperwork

We’ll confirm which program your home falls under based on your electric utility, size the equipment to qualify, and handle the application. For the rest of the cost, Davis offers financing through Synchrony with monthly payment options.

Hybrid System or Full Heat Pump Conversion?

Some homeowners ask whether they should skip the furnace entirely and go all-electric.

A hybrid system usually makes more sense if your furnace is under 10 years old, if your ductwork was sized for a furnace and would need changes to carry a heat pump alone, or if you’d rather keep a combustion backup for the occasional single-digit night.

A full conversion is worth pricing out if your furnace is near the end of its life anyway, if you’re heating with oil or propane and want off delivered fuel for good, or if your home is well insulated. Utility programs offer larger rebates when the heat pump takes over more of the heating, so we’ll show you the numbers on both paths before you decide.

Hybrid Heating System FAQs

A hybrid heating system, also called a dual-fuel system, combines an electric heat pump with a gas, oil, or propane furnace. The heat pump handles heating on milder days and cools your home in summer. The furnace takes over when outdoor temperatures drop low enough that it becomes the more efficient choice.

No. In most homes, we keep your existing furnace and replace your outdoor AC unit with a heat pump. As long as your furnace is in good working condition and compatible with integrated controls, it stays in place as your second heat source.

Under PSE&G’s Hybrid Heat pathway, qualifying projects can earn up to $2,000 or 30% of project cost, and income-qualified households can earn up to $3,000 or 40%. The exact amount depends on your utility, your equipment, and your project cost. We’ll give you an estimate with your quote.

Cold-climate heat pumps are tested to keep producing heat at low outdoor temperatures and are listed on an approved product list, such as the one maintained by the Northeast Energy Efficiency Partnerships. Rebate programs require equipment from these lists, so we only quote qualifying models for rebate projects.

The switchover point depends on your home, your equipment, and local fuel and electricity prices. Many systems switch somewhere between the mid-20s and mid-30s. We set it during installation and can adjust it later if your energy costs change.

For most homes, yes, particularly if you heat with oil or propane or your current AC is older and less efficient. The savings come from letting the heat pump handle the many mild heating days in a South Jersey winter. Your results depend on your home’s insulation, ductwork, and utility rates.

Yes. Hybrid systems work with gas, oil, and propane furnaces. Homes heating with delivered fuel often see the biggest difference, since the heat pump cuts how many gallons you burn each winter.

Most hybrid installs take one to two days, depending on whether your home needs electrical work or duct changes. We’ll give you a timeline with your quote.

Our Hybrid Heating Installation Process

  1. Home assessment: We look at your furnace, ductwork, electrical panel, and current AC, and ask how your home heats and cools room by room.
  2. Load calculation: We run Manual J and Manual S calculations to size the heat pump correctly, which most rebate programs require.
  3. Equipment and rebate review: You get a written quote with qualifying cold-climate equipment and an estimate of the rebate your project should earn.
  4. Installation: Our team installs the heat pump, connects it to your furnace and ductwork, and sets up the integrated controls.
  5. Testing and setup: We test both heat sources, set the switchover point, and show you how the thermostat works.
  6. Rebate paperwork: We submit the documentation the program requires and keep you posted until it’s processed.
